Rachael partnered with the Southern Gulf Islands Tourism Partnership Society (SGITPS) to highlight regenerative and sustainable tourism practices for people visiting the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia. These stunning and unique islands are located in the Salish Sea on the southwest coast of Canada between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia. The islands are surrounded by ecologically diverse oceans which orcas, harbour seals, porpoises, sea stars, crabs, salmon, and much more call home. The land includes unique coastal rock formations, rare Garry Oak ecosystems, and a rich diversity of flora and fauna, some of which are at-risk species.
The project not only focused on encouraging visitors to treat the communities, land, and ocean with respect when visiting through sustainable practices, but to go even further to give back to the islands by leaving it better than they found it (ie. regenerative tourism). The content included highlighting the following non-profit organizations working to support community and environment: Mayne Island Conservancy, Pender Islands Conservancy, Galiano Island Conservancy, and BC Parks Foundation.
After strategizing and planning with (SGITPS), Rachael produced, wrote, filmed, hosted, and edited short-form videos intended for social media on Mayne Island, Pender Islands, Galiano Island, Saturna Island, and Saltspring Island. Reels and stories were posted on Rachael’s @thenatureeducator social media platforms in collaboration with the non-profit organizations being highlighted in the content. Rachael also created story sets to accompany each reel to provide a deeper dive into each project.
The project was a great success and a wonderful example of how tourism organizations can encourage visitors to practice sustainable and regenerative tourism, and give back to the local communities.
